Brutha Gimel's Spin CityIn an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …

I'm always looking for new artist to share space in my library. While doing so I came across a couple of names from the past.

  • "Let Off," Kurupt
I remember back in '94 and west coast rap music was storming the world and Tha Dogg Pound was right in the thick of the explosion. If you are familiar with the rapping K-9 duo then you know just how ferocious of an emcee Kurupt is. I must say he "Let Off" on this one and he brought some friends along for the ride. This is mic ripping without the gangster back drop just skills.
  • "Slow Down," Masta Ace
Masta Ace has returned to hit us off with the art of story telling once again. Remember when rappers told stories? Haha. Here's a little joint about what happens when partying goes too far. This is the side of being on tour many rappers don't touch on. I guess it takes veterans to school the youngins!

  • "Mother In Law," Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars
I know a lot of people have mad love for the Kuti family when it comes to music. Why wouldn't they? Fela spawned a sound that became the signature for African dance music. I was definitely caught the ghost and found myself swaying in my seat listening to this one.

  • "Just Walk," Apollo Brown feat. OC
Here's a joint with a relative new name alongside of a throwback from the '90's. Apollo Brown being the new has made the column before but OC the phenomenon has not. I love to see the older cats still grinding in the booth especially when they don't sound crazy dated. This one is for the underground heads who got love for that headbanger boogie sound. Gon' break ya neck to this!

  • "Love Me Not," TiRon feat. Schoolboy Q
(available in this week's #musicmonday downloads)
Think about the last time you had to ask if your love interest felt the same. Did you pick the petals off a flow to get your answer? Let the sound of the violins lead you into this ill flow. By the time the drums kick in you should understand the emcee's pain. Feel the vibe. It's funny cause our ego's sometimes won't let us pour it all out but I know hurt when I hear it.

In addition to checking out Da Poetry Lounge tonight, check ya brother out this week at the M Bar. I doing my promotion and spinning thing. Building the brand. Your support is welcome, appreciated and needed. .
